A Story That Spans Generations

In 2005, Urban Impact was celebrating 10 years of ministry, reaching about 500 students through Athletics and Summer Day Camp. But Pastor Ed and Tammy Glover dreamed of reaching even more. Tammy, passionate about the arts, started a small choir in their living room. Before long, the group outgrew the space—so their neighbors, the Phelps family, opened their home to help.

One of those kids was Valerie Phelps, a young girl who loved singing every Tuesday night. For seven years, she grew in faith and confidence—performing solos, feeling “safe, loved, and free to be myself,” and knowing she was seen and valued.

Today, Valerie is raising her own family right here on the North Side. After years away, she and her husband returned home—enrolling their kids in Urban Impact programs so they could experience the same love and guidance she once did. Cyrus (5) just graduated from our preschool and now plays soccer while learning God’s Word. Azlynn (3) attends preschool four days a week and can’t wait to join more programs as she grows.

What began with one little girl in a living room has now impacted the next generation. For 30 years, Urban Impact has served the North Side—reaching more than 1,700 youth this year alone. Valerie’s story reminds us that when one life is transformed, an entire family—and community—can be changed forever.

As this year comes to a close, would you consider giving a special year-end gift to Urban Impact?

Your generosity helps more children like Cyrus and Azlynn thrive in faith, family, and hope for their future.

Together, we can continue transforming lives and spreading the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Hezekiah

One day at Summer Day Camp, Hezekiah’s tutor pointed out that he was reading first grade words, things he had yet to learn in school! Not only did Hezekiah progress in his literacy skills while in our programs, but he made the decision to follow Jesus and received a Bible! This school year, he brought his new Bible to class as a show-and-tell to share his favorite book with classmates.

CORA

We met Cora as a Kindergarten student in Literacy Support as she was just beginning to learn her letters. After meeting her parents, we were able to also register her for several other programs including Tutoring Center, Soccer, Performing Arts Academy, Learning Labs, and Summer Day Camp. Now we see Cora almost every week of the year and have the chance to serve her and her family holistically! At the beginning of this summer, Cora scored proficient in her reading test, which means she is reading at grade level!
