HELP ERASE EDUCATION GAPS

AND SHARE THE LOVE & HOPE OF JESUS CHRIST.

REACHING STUDENTS WHERE THEY WERE

30 years ago, Pastor Ed and I desired to “reach students where they were” through basketball and performing arts. While using these avenues to create relationships and share the gospel, we noticed a disconnect between students that were participating in programs and those in Bible studies. We came to realize that some students who wanted to follow Christ were missing one important piece: they couldn’t read the Bible! So we created programs centered around literacy and math to erase the educational gaps to the most important need of a student — a personal relationship with Christ. Presently, we are working to erase these 4 educational gaps that our students are facing by building them up holistically.

WHY IT MATTERS

1. Falling Behind

47% of 3rd – 5th grade students in Pennsylvania scored basic or below on the English PSSAs.¹
At Urban Impact:
We offered over 16,000 hours of individualized & small group tutoring in local elementary schools, after school, and during our Summer Day Camp.
Urban Impact tackles Education gaps head-on by partnering with local schools to provide additional academic support inside and outside of school year-round. This year, we sent 41 staff members and volunteers to work with teachers for individualized and small group tutoring. After school, we provided free tutoring help twice a week for 40 weeks. We also ran a 7-week Summer Day Camp to combat learning regression. In addition to field trips, worship, capture the flag, and Bible study, academic reinforcement in reading and math is delivered to campers each day.

2. mENTAL HEALTH

The most commonly cited instructional barrier by school administrators was “addressing social and emotional issues.²
At Urban Impact:
We paired 48 adults & students into mentoring relationships, which positively impacts “feelings of isolation, anxiety levels, self-confidence, felling heard, & hope for the future.³
Across all programs, we operate in a 1:6 adult to student ratio to offer more attention to each child. Volunteers and staff often drive students to and from program and intentionally ask them about their “highs and lows” for the day. Staff also receive “safe place” and “trauma response” training to facilitate the creation of a loving atmosphere.

Athletic involvement is consistently linked to a decrease in anxiety and depression. Between basketball, baseball, soccer, and football, we had 993 students in our Athletics programs this year. In addition to teaching on-the-field skills, we always prioritize Bible studies and character lessons.

3. graduation

The local high school graduation rate is 78.9% since 2020.⁴
At Urban Impact:
98% of our core students graduated and 92.7% successfully launched into their post-high school plan since 2020.
In our Options programs, we match students and mentors to create a safe space to ask questions and work towards a future on one of 5 “busses” – college, trade school, military, ministry, or workforce. To that end, we helped fill out financial aid and scholarship applications, toured colleges and workforce training programs, and hired 31 students to work for Urban Impact and ministry partners through our Job Inc. workforce development program.

4. Food insecurity

In the Pittsburgh area, nearly 60,000 children go to bed worried about their next meal.⁵
At Urban Impact:
We served 32,989 meals and snacks to students during each program.
We strive to fight food insecurity by providing snacks and/or a meal at every single program. Around the holidays, we partnered with Light of Life to deliver 175 Thanksgiving baskets to our families and pray with them.

In our Performing Arts Academy, students attend multiple electives such as jazz band, construction, or choir as an outlet for creativity and worshipping the Lord through song and dance, but we always take a break between classes to share a meal.

TEACHER TESTIMONIAL

impact stories

Hezekiah

One day at Summer Day Camp, Hezekiah’s tutor pointed out that he was reading first grade words, things he had yet to learn in school! Not only did Hezekiah progress in his literacy skills while in our programs, but he made the decision to follow Jesus and received a Bible! This school year, he brought his new Bible to class as a show-and-tell to share his favorite book with classmates.

CORA

We met Cora as a Kindergarten student in Literacy Support as she was just beginning to learn her letters. After meeting her parents, we were able to also register her for several other programs including Tutoring Center, Soccer, Performing Arts Academy, Learning Labs, and Summer Day Camp. Now we see Cora almost every week of the year and have the chance to serve her and her family holistically! At the beginning of this summer, Cora scored proficient in her reading test, which means she is reading at grade level!
