Upon finishing graduate school in 2011, she began working in direct ministry and soon became the Director of Education and eventually the Senior Director of Education and Options. Sara is excited to have built amazing relationships with students, their families, program volunteers and staff and is excited to be using those experiences in her new role back in the Business office of the organization. As chief operating officer, she hopes to build on the ministry’s commitment to good stewardship of the resources entrusted to us for reaching the North Side with the good news of Jesus Christ and his love, grace and peace for our community. Sara and her husband Josh live on the North Side with their four children…their four fun-loving, wall coloring, drink-spilling, adorable kids.

Kortney McGarvey
Options Coaching and School Partnership Manager
Kortney McGarvey started with Urban Impact in the spring of 2019, and has made the North Side her residence! She graduated from Waynesburg University where she earned her degree in Biblical Ministries Studies. Kortney has a deep passion for high school students to personally know the Lord, and to know their intrinsic value as His beloved children and called servants. She is committed to be an advocate for students and their families as they discover their God given gifts, and as they discern God’s calling on their lives.

Zack McClelland
Technical & Video Coordinator
After working for two years at Urban Impact, God called Zack to be more involved with the ministry as an Urban Missionary. Zack is involved with various aspects of the Performing Arts department––mentoring students in the Urban Impact Choir, Performing Arts Academy, and Urban Impact Shakes. He has also been able to use his passion for video editing to assist the Performing Arts department with marketing and program videos. He hopes to eventually teach video editing to students in the Performing Arts. Zack and his lovely wife, Courtney, are raising their support as a couple to serve God on the North Side of Pittsburgh.

Sheri Turnbull
Director of Children’s Choir
Sheri has known Pastor Ed and Tammy since they moved to Pittsburgh 25 years ago, and has supported their ministry with worship and prayer ever since. In 2010 she became a program volunteer in Performing Arts, and says, “I love the spirit of unity and partnership in following the call of Jesus together.” In her position leading spiritual formation for the Performing Arts Department, she witnesses transformation in the lives of young people in the choir, and feels honored to be entrusted with this role. Sheri lives in Cheswick with her husband Ken, who is a pastor at Allegheny Center Alliance Church. Their children Jessica and Jacob are both in their twenties.

Bruce Volstad
Assistant Director of Training Center

Bruce is married to one of the original UIF kids, Amy Duerr Volstad. Amy is a mental health therapist and vice-president of Extravagant Love Project. Matthew, a California native, had his first experience with Urban Impact as an intern at Summer Day Camp. He had graduated from California Baptist University and had never been to Pittsburgh; now that he’s on staff he has made it his home. As the Music Coordinator for the Performing Arts Department, he is responsible for training the Urban Impact Choir and Urban Impact Singers. “I grew up listening to Gospel music by choice. Although my tastes have broadened greatly, Gospel is still my favorite.” Matthew is thankful that his job is directly connected to his divine purpose. “Every day I know that all the time and hard work that I give is all for the Lord.” Matthew lives in Penn Hills with his wife Zuli.

Zuli Mason
Program Assistant for Singers, Choir, and Options
Zuli came to Pittsburgh from Philadelphia and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Tammy Glover
Sr. Director of Performing Arts
Tammy began the Performing Arts ministry in 2005 in her living room with 12 students. Weekly choir rehearsals soon turned into “dinner with the Glovers,” Bible study, and then choir practice. By year’s end, 40 young people met weekly in the Glover home. Today the Performing Arts program boasts 120 students in the Middle School and High School Choir who have been seen by 2.6 million people. There are also 70 students in the Children’s Choir, 115 participants in the Performing Arts Academy, and two traveling ensembles–the Urban Impact Singers and the Urban Impact Shakes. She graduated from Seattle Pacific University and received her Master’s of Divinity from Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, NY. She began her career teaching English as a second language. Tammy is the mother of four children, all of which have been born and raised on the North Side of Pittsburgh. She and Ed have also “parented” 13 other children from the neighborhood. These 13, while not formally adopted, are also seated around the dinner table when the family gathers.

Adam Kennard
Technical Theatre Coordinator
After graduating in May of 2016 from Carnegie Mellon with a Master of Fine Arts in Theatrical Production and Management the Lord guided him on a path to become a Technical Theatre Urban Missionary. Adam is particularly excited for the opportunity to share Christ with the students of the North Side through carpentry, lighting, painting, sewing, and all the production areas of theatre.

He spent time participating and volunteering throughout his childhood before joining the staff in his early twenties. Nathan began working in Athletics and is now working in the Performing Arts Department, aiding in spiritual formation, support raising, and helping lay the foundations for Urban Impact’s Training Center. Nathan has received a Bachelors in History from Grove City College, a Certificate of Theology from the University of Oxford, graduated from the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics and received his Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical School for Ministry. Nathan and his wife, Amy, live on the North Side of Pittsburgh with their two young sons.

He is a Pittsburgh actor, former participant of the Breakthrough Television and Actors’ Theatre in Columbus, and a former volunteer at Urban Impact. Rachel Hardy

Rachel hails from a small town south of Pittsburgh, but is no stranger to urban settings. Upon graduating from Penn State University with degrees in Theatre Design and Technology, Information Sciences and Technology, and Music Technology, she moved to New York City for three years to work in the field of audio production on Broadway shows and national tours. In 2016, she decided to try touring for herself and spent the next year traveling the continent with a theatrical production. After all these years of adventure, the Lord put it on her heart that it was time to settle down in Pittsburgh and use her gifts to spread a passion for theater and the love of Jesus. Rachel and her husband Kurtis enjoy traveling, scuba diving, cooking, singing Christmas carols, hiking, iced coffee, and spoiling their precious Corgi puppy, Meeko.

Rachel Kyriazis
Education Program Assistant
Rachel has always had a passion for investing in today’s kids to become tomorrow’s leaders. She also loves supporting other leaders in ministry so that they can best glorify God in their work. When Rachel found out about the Education Program Assistant position, she was excited to have a job which would utilize both of her passions. Rachel has lived in Pittsburgh for most of her life, except when she went to Regent University for three years to study Professional Studies with an English emphasis. She had grand plans to intern abroad or stay near the beach, but God called her back home to Pittsburgh. In the years since she has been back, Rachel has worked with several local nonprofits and discovered that a large reason for God calling her back to Pittsburgh was to learn how to be the hands and feet of Jesus in her homeland. In her free time, Rachel enjoys blogging at www.raejoyce.wordpress.com, reading, cooking, and throwing pottery on the wheel.

Lorenze Jefferson
Music Coordinator
Lorenze brings a decade worth of experience working with high school students to Urban Impact. Before joining UIF’s staff, Lorenze was a high school coordinator for the Pittsburgh Project, another North Side nonprofit. He first encountered Urban Impact in 1994, when he was in high school himself, at a basketball outreach night. He continued to cross paths with Urban Impact staff and eventually decided to become an urban missionary. He now coordinates Urban Impact’s bucket band and jazz band and works with music students at Perry High School.

Arria Washington
Literacy Support Coordinator
Arria has always enjoyed serving young people, and finds nothing more fulfilling, or more fun. She is passionate about justice, and believes that literacy is a human right that is crucial to personal and societal well-being. After spending four years tutoring and teaching in a public school district, she felt lead to find a position that would allow her to address students’ spiritual needs as well. Now, she is exited to help bring about holistic transformations by helping students grow in knowledge and in faith. Arria greatly appreciates Urban Impact’s relational approach to ministry, and their commitment to serving the people of the North Side by truly living life with them.

Laura Maffeo
Assistant Director of Academic Enrichment
Laura joined Urban Impact staff in January 2017. She grew up in the Pittsburgh area and went to college at Robert Morris University. During college, God used various ministry and missions experiences to give her a heart for both the nonprofit sector and serving others. This eventually led her to joining the Urban Impact team! She originally served as the Education Executive Assistant, and is now the Assistant Director of Academic Enrichment. Laura loves getting to build relationships with students and volunteers, and enjoys seeing how God continues to use her for the work He is doing in the world.

Jessica Carleton

While serving as a Summer Day Camp intern for two years, God prepared Jessica’s heart to work as an Urban Missionary with Urban Impact. She decided to pursue a full-time position with Urban Impact as a Literacy Support Coordinator. After several years of working in a local children’s ministry and childcare facility, she felt led to do an internship with Urban Impact’s Summer Day Camp. She instantly fell in love with teaching and creating disciples of young people in Pittsburgh. She then accepted a position as an urban missionary in the Education department. This position will continue to strengthen the relationships she has built with the students and she is excited to reach the city for Christ, one person, one family, one block at a time.

After serving the Lord internationally for a year, she found herself back in Pittsburgh with a strong desire to give back to the community. Julia accepted a position with Urban Impact Fellow’s program and is working alongside the Education Department while receiving an education of basic Christian theology and urban Christian community development. Julia loves to serve and build personal relationships with the students. In her free time, she loves spending time in coffee shops, reading a book, or hanging out with friends.

Joshua Gerdes

Growing up in a Christian Missionary Alliance Church, I got to see firsthand the importance missional work can have, not only in other countries, but right here in our own neighborhoods. In 2016, I started volunteering with the Literacy support team at ATA on the North Side. That following summer I decided to work the Summer Day Camp as a camp counselor. I fell in love with the children and the area and I got to see and participate in the changing of lives that Jesus was doing in my own town. Now taking the next step of faith, I signed on as a full time Urban Missionary with Urban Impact, working in the Education department as a Summer Day Camp Coordinator. I am extremally excited to see the growth that God has prepared for the children we are blessed to work with on the North Side.

She and her husband, Nate, live on the North Side of Pittsburgh with their two young sons.

Amanda Wagner
Director of Education
After serving as an intern for two summers at Urban Impact’s Summer Day Camp, Amanda knew that urban ministry was where God wanted her to be. Graduating from Taylor University in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in Christian Educational Ministry and a minor in Sociology, Amanda began full-time ministry at Urban Impact. As Director of Education, Amanda’s desire is to share the hope and love of Jesus through academic programs – knowing that true transformation only occurs through relationships. Justin Iler
Basketball Outreach Urban Missionary
Looking back over my life, it seems God has been calling me into Inner- City Missions for many years. Throughout my youth, I started participating in mission trips to Atlanta, Cleveland, New Orleans, and Lynchburg, Virginia to serve the poor and underprivileged. Through these trips, my heart was drawn to young people who live in the inner city, and I felt called by God to go and build relationships with youth in the projects. Through these experiences, I had to wrestle with what it meant to be a white, affluent male in communities that were made up of minorities who had very little. As God showed me my identity in Him and how to love people best, He also showed me how to treat people in these communities with dignity. As a result of these experiences and God’s calling on my life, I am eager to spread the gospel to the least of these and bring about a holistic change in the lives of teenagers and children one person, one family, and one block at a time.

These verses in scripture and heart for her community confirmed that she was to obey God’s call to serve with Urban Impact. Ed Glover
Founder & President
Rev. Dr. Ed Glover and his wife Tammy have passionately followed their calling to minister to the least, the last, and the lost in Pittsburgh’s urban North Side community for almost 30 years. Together they founded Urban Impact in 1995, after serving for almost a decade in youth ministry at Allegheny Center Alliance Church.
Rev. Glover is a leader, a visionary, an evangelist, and a motivational speaker. In 2011, Pastor Ed received the prestigious Restoring Places Award at the Epoch Missions Gala in Atlanta, GA. In 2014, Urban Impact was also awarded the inaugural “True Inspiration Award” for the northeast region, from the Chick-fil-A Foundation for demonstrating “groundbreaking practices and visionary leadership” with innovative education.
Pastor Ed also founded Global Impact USA six years prior to Urban Impact’s inception. Global Impact was an annual, one-day missions event that gave students the charge to respond to the call of God in their lives and put it into practice. For the next 24 years, he incited over 55,000 kids from 19 cities to participate in the Global Impact mission. As a result, this produced over 1,000 pastors and missionaries to serve around the world.
Today, Rev. Glover is a highly respected and sought-after speaker. He is regularly scheduled to speak at churches both locally and nationally. He currently serves as Associate Preacher and Director of Urban Missions at Christ Church at Grove Farm in Sewickley, PA.
Ed graduated from Lambuth University in Tennessee, and received his Masters of Divinity from Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, NY. In 2001, Ed received an honorary doctorate from Toccoa Falls College for his work in the urban setting. In 2003, both Ed and Tammy were recipients of the Alumni of the Year Award for both the Alliance Theological Seminary and Nyack College.
Ed and Tammy continue to live on the North Side. They have four children, three daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren.
